1) Why should I consider learning Motivational Interviewing (MI)?
In short, MI is a method for engaging people in conversation and guiding them to consider and commit to positive changes. If your professional role includes having such conversations with people, the research shows that MI is the most effective way to conduct those conversations. MI is also associated with improved outcomes for your clients, and increased job satisfaction for employees. It is challenging for most people to learn, but the rewards it brings, both professionally and personally, more than repay the effort invested.
2) I’ve had some training in Motivational Interviewing in the past. Can I skip the Basic training and go right into Intermediate?
Enrolling directly in an Intermediate training would be recommended if your previous training was relatively recent (say, in the past few months), or if you’ve been keeping up with practicing MI via supervision, MI group participation, MI coaching, etc. Otherwise, we recommend beginning with the Basic workshop, as skill gains in this approach can be short-lived if not actively maintained.
If you’re someone who uses MI regularly, is familiar with the spirit, skills, and evocation strategies used in MI, and has had a number of opportunities to practice MI and receive feedback and coaching in the model, you might consider enrolling directly in the Advanced training.
3) Can I get continuing education credit for the training?
The information regarding continuing education credit approvals is on each informational flyer, which you can find on the “Learn More” page for each training. You must attend all sessions of the training in their entirety to obtain any credit. Those trainings that are not eligible for continuing education credit are clearly marked.
4) My ORGanization wants to have a training with just our employees. How does that work?
Arranging an organization-based or program-based training can do a lot to facilitate your employees’ use of MI with your clients, as it allows us to tailor our examples and materials to represent the populations served by your organization.
